PHILOSOPHICAL DISPOSITION
Perfection is a state of mind.
Mindfulness is the secret of life
Expect nothing, be ready for anything
Trust and live in your heart
Everyday be ready for death
THEORETICAL FOCUS
I am an eclectic, front–line therapist
utilizing whatever approach the situation
calls for: confrontation, meditation,
philosophical inquiry, bibliotherapy and
one-on-one consultation. My primary focus
of interest is the integration of altered states
of consciousness resulting in clarity and
personal empowerment, and the ageing-death
experience. My role-model teachers are
Socrates, Osho, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
and the Buddha..
Over the years I have drawn on many different philosophical traditions
and practices in helping others solve the existential dilemmas that trouble
them. Though no particular tradition is appropriate or effective for all
problems, I have found the Eastern philosophical approaches to be more
relevant in this day and age. I have lived in India and Nepal for many
years, studying with the wise men in the monasteries, ashrams and power
places of the Himalaya, where life is hard and death around the next
corner; the human mind is a product of the struggle and understanding for
existence, and nowhere is that more evident than in Asia. I am a truth
seeker, and I utilize any and all teachings and techniques that the ancient
wisdoms offer, and I engage the client in an authentic existential
encounter in an effort to fulfill the Socratic mandate to “KNOW
THYSELF,” or as the Indian sages ask, “WHO AM I?”.
Method and Theoretical Orientation
I work primarily one-on-one. When we are together you have my full
attention, eyeball-to-eyeball. What is your intention? Why are you here?
What do you want to get out of this? What is your philosophy of life and
where are you stuck? We are here to sort out your confusions. Tell me
who you are. Dig way down deep and tell us your true nature. What are
your doubts and fears? Are you up for the task of inner transformation? I
will direct, suggest, cajole and lead you into new areas of your untapped
mind, suggest books to read, lifestyle changes, things to do to get
unstuck, how to direct your consciousness away from destructive habits
and modes of thinking, into more creative and life affirming paths.
My methods can sometimes be a little sharp; to Know Thyself is serious
business and we don’t want to waste time. Soft as a rose, hard as a
thunderbolt, as the Tibetans say, death is right around the corner so let’s
get on with it. No hocus-pocus or other mystifications. Between our
wisdom nature and our unruly ego we search for the middle way. I have
no magic, only long experience garnered over many years in different
lands and cultures, and with the same pains and confusions as everyone
else
So my basic theoretical orientation is Buddhist, for I have found that all
solutions for the problems of disharmony and dissatisfaction in life can be
found in the Buddha’s teaching. And it really doesn’t have anything to do
with Buddhism; it’s just common sense. Meditation, contemplation,
reflection, and as we get more and more into the teachings of the wise
ones, and start to integrate them into our life, slowly our inner wisdom is
awakened and we can discern more clearly between our true nature and
our phony ego. If we aspire to happiness, harmony, and equanimity, we
can only achieve it through right thinking and right living.
Who knows why we’re here, where we’ve come from, and where we’re
going? There are some who think they do, but most are just stumbling
along in confusion in an endeavor to understand what life is all about, and
how we fit into the grand scheme of things, of consciousness, of death, of
love and lust, of purpose. Ramakrishna, the Indian saint, has aptly
expressed it; we are like chicks in an egg waiting to be hatched. There is
a time for the shell to crack, just when the chick is ready, and until that
time nothing will happen. My job is to help you crack your shell, and
come out into the light.
